more about the making of Breaking Up & Down:
Phase 1: Basic tracks were recorded digitally by Scott Ramsayer and the band in our friend Doug Pletcher's giant living room in Lockport, IL. We used two 8-track ADAT recorders in sync with each other.
Tony played guitar and sang guide vocals, to be replaced later in overdubbing.
Devin played guitar and sang guide vocals, to be replaced later in overdubbing.
Dave played bass.
John played drums. And the neighbors didn't complain once. Nerd alert! See what gear was used.
Phase 2: Vocal overdubs were recorded digitally by Tony and Devin on a Macintosh Pro Tools system at Tony's apartment. Tony and Devin sang most vocals in the "front room," chosen not for its acoustic value, but for its proximity to the computer, so any given performer could race quickly to the computer keyboard as soon as he realized he had just fucked something up royally. Guitar overdubs were recorded digitally by Tony, Dave, and Devin on a Macintosh Pro Tools system in the band's secret rehearsal cave. Mike DeAngelis played analog synthesizers.
Phase 3: The album was digitally mixed on a Macintosh Pro Tools system by Scott Ramsayer at Kingsize Sound Labs on Western Ave. in Chicago. He was assisted by Susan Durler and Toru Hironaka. Kazoo overdubs were also recorded at Kingsize. It was mastered by Roger Siebel at SAE Mastering in Phoenix, Arizona.
