REVIEWS The Glass Eye, Cleveland, October 1997 review, entire text: It's a nice change of pace when I get a CD from a new band that sounds nothing like grunge. The latest CD from The Good has obviously been made by a bunch of guys who've grown up listening to classic rock stations, for they have that full 70's sound about them. They also have a quirkiness about them that reminds you of The Barenaked Ladies or even Dread Zeppelin. Slightly off center, but still making good music. The tracks are rockin' tunes that are up tempo and raucous, like a good 'ole Boston or Elton John tune. And they toss just enough pop culture references into the fray that you stop and say, "Did they just talk about Craig T. Nelson making a speech?" or "Was that about the million man march?" Which of course is all in there. There's also tracks called "Ay, Sent A Ferret," one called "Harry & the Mushroom," a song about "To Kill A Mockingbird" called "Atticus" and a ditty entitled "Electric Bandaids." But the titles don't mean shit if the music ain't any good. And The Good is damn good. Sporting loud guitars with heavy riffs, they lay down some numbers that are full overdrive, but still manage to sound original. No simple task in this day or any day and age. Incorporating piano, some strings, and even a few choice samples into the fray, Milky White has all the earmarks of becoming a fan favorite and a critic darling. |
